Bad weather halts historic Space X launch

Poor weather has forced SpaceX to call off the launch of NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken to the International Space Station (ISS). The two men were due to go up from the Kennedy Space Center in what would have been the first orbital mission from the US in nine years. But unfavorable atmospheric conditions prompted controllers to call a stop just 16 minutes before lift-off. The next opportunity for SpaceX and NASA will come on Saturday. But this was an instantaneous launch window where the SpaceX Falcon rocket and its Dragon crew capsule had to leave on time or they wouldn't be able to catch the space station. There is great interest in this mission. Not since the retirement of the shuttles in 2011 has America been able to launch its own astronauts into space - a big gap in which the US has had to rely on Russian Soyuz…

If the unprecedented global race for the first effective human coronavirus vaccine is successful, only 49 percent of Americans say they would get the vaccine, according to an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll released Wednesday morning. Another 31 percent said they were not sure while 20 percent said they would not get the vaccine. About 70 percent of those currently refusing the future vaccine cited safety concerns, while an equal share of those who would get a vaccine said it's the only way to get life back to normal. The top reason among people who said yes was to protect their family and community. "There's still a large amount of uncertainty around taking the vaccine," NORC's Caitlin Oppenheimer told AP. 'Nature's antifreeze' provides formula for more durable concrete

Secrets to cementing the sustainability of our future infrastructure may come from nature, such as proteins that keep plants and animals from freezing in extremely cold conditions. Researchers have discovered that a synthetic molecule based on natural antifreeze proteins minimizes freeze-thaw damage and increases the strength and durability of concrete, improving the longevity of new infrastructure and decreasing carbon emissions over its lifetime.

Watch SpaceX's 1st astronaut launch live

SpaceX is readying for a historic launch, and you can watch the whole thing live. On Wednesday, SpaceX will for the first time launch astronauts into orbit. NASA's Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken are headed to the International Space Station and will become the first astronauts to launch from the U.S. since 2011, NPR reports. NASA on its website hails the fact that with this launch, a "new era of human spaceflight is set to begin," and NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said this week this is a "unique opportunity to bring all of America together in one moment in time and say, look at how bright the future is." The launch will take place at Florida's Kennedy Space Center, and it's scheduled for just after 4:30 p.m. Eastern, although NBC News notes that NASA is "monitoring weather reports at the Florida launch site that may delay proceedings." NASA will live stream the launch below. Brendan Morrow

Photos of the Sleek New Ride Ready To Return US Astronauts To Space

This is the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, sitting on its cargo-carrying “trunk”. The dragon will (God willing) carry two astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) this Wednesday. The capsule will be locked onto the nose of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, pictured here blasting off from Florida’s Merrit Island in January 2020. Since 2011 NASA has paid Russia up to $86 Million per head to send its astronauts into space after America’s eye-wateringly expensive Space Shuttle program was closed down.

New protocol for organic synthesis using organoboron compounds and visible-light

The generation of alkyl radicals was achieved by direct visible-light excitation of the organoborate complex, which was designed and synthesized from 'boracene,' which has a boron atom in the tetracene-like skeleton. The alkyl radicals thus obtained could be used as a carbon source for chemical reactions, enabling the synthesis of complicated/bulky organic compounds. The present study offers a new protocol for organic synthesis, which is expected to accelerate e.g. drug discovery.
